BELLA DONNA: Information Page

Terrace Little Theatre's spring show "Bella Donna" has been cast!

Terrace Little Theatre is proud to present David Copelin's "Bella Donna". Based on events in the life of Lucreza Borgia this dark comedy has been described as one part Shakespearean intrigue and one part slapstick farce.

"Bella Donna" is set in Renaissance Italy when the fortunes of the Borgia family are in decline following the death of Rodrigo Borgia, who was Pope Alexander VI, and Lucrezia's father. The family's rivals and enemies seek revenge; The Borgias have subsequently come to epitomize the ruthless, devious politics and sexual corruption alleged to be characteristic of the Renaissance Papacy and their reputations have been blackened for five hundred years. However, very little fact is known of Lucrezia and the extent of her complicity in the machinations of her father and brother's political ambition is, historically, unclear.

Winner of the 2005 Toronto Fringe Festival's New Play Award, David Copelin's "Bella Donna" addresses Lucrezia's third marriage to Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Sharp, satiric, full of hot blooded characters the play takes surprising turns, creating a dramatic world of a very different time and place.

Warning: Sexual content. For mature audiences only.

Directed by Chris Stone and featuring Robin Hollett as Lucrezia Borgia, John Dafoe as Alfonso d'Este, Bayani Generoso as Giovanni, a young soldier, Sonja Foss as Angela, a ward of Alfonso and a Countess in her own right, and Devon Huning as Sister Bibiana, long time confidante of Lucrezia and a nun of a very different order.

Play Reading - Bella Donna

This coming Wednesday, September 29, the TLT is reading "Bella Donna" by David Copelin at the McColl Playhouse at 7pm.

This adult comedy may be produced in the new year, and we would love to have some new faces to play in this fun event. We need a young woman of 15 or 16 or someone who can play down to that age. Also needed is a young man 20 to 25 or someone who can play that age. The three other roles need to be played by older actors. All roles are dynamic and vital parts of the story. There are no small parts in this play.

The story is set in Renaissance Italy. Copelin's clever and darkly funny script about the sexual, political, and religious intrigues surrounding history's notorious Lucrezia Borgia gets a new production directed by Chris Stone. Excommunicated by her father's successor as Pope, weary of her husband's infidelities, Lucrezia finds passion with Giovanni, a young soldier she meets while both are in disguise. As war looms, the irony of unintended consequences reveals a long-buried secret that tests everyone in the play. Sharp, satiric, full of hot-blooded characters, David Copelin's Bella Donna dramatizes a world where religious faith takes surprising forms, lies fuel history, and gossip might as well be truth.

The play was the winner of the 2005 Fringe Festival Best Play Award.

Backstage help is needed and particularly some help with costumes. We really need help. Please come to the play reading and meet us. You will be made very welcome.
