TLT's Theatre Instructor Tour Enjoyed an Exciting Weekend!!!

The Terrace Little Theatre welcomed Garry Davey for the theatre instructor workshops for the Skeena Zone clubs this past weekend.

We would like to thank Garry for all his valuable input and experience as well as all those who came out to make this weekend a very special event.

We would also like to send out a quick thank you from The Skeena Zone of Theatre BC Executive to Terrace Little Theatre for hosting the McColl Playhouse for our weekend workshops.

We would like to thank the TLT volunteers who came out of the wood work – Janine and Adam to help with the coffee and food, and Karla who took registrations Friday and Saturday and Alan for cleaning up . Also Nathan for attending the Youth Workshop and the Sunday Play Reading and representing the Club, Amy for digging through scripts so we had a hard copy of The Melville Boys, Kristin for running coffee-interference on Nathan’s behalf (and yes we needed the extra coffee), Garnett for setting up the room and Chris, Erica and Robert for providing Baxter with such solid and talented support in his New Play Workshop. It was so nice to see everyone come together to appreciate and learn!

Terrace Little Theatre Presents a Theatre Instructor Tour Next Friday April 24th!!!

Terrace Little Theatre will be hosting the theatre instructor tour for the Skeena Zone Workshop Weekend, April 24th-26th, 2015. Below is a brief outline of Garry's history in theatre, followed by an outline of the workshop dates, and times.

GUEST THEATRE INSTRUCTOR Garry Davey

Garry Davey has been the Artistic Director for TheatreOne in Nanaimo and of the William Davis Centre for Actor's Study in Vancouver where he taught acting and directed for many years. A graduate of The Vancouver Playhouse Acting School, he has worked extensively as an actor in theatres across the country, as well as appearing in many television productions and feature films including recurring episodes of Da Vinci's Inquest; Cold Squad, and The X-Files. Garry recently appeared in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, and The Miracle Worker by William Gibson for The Chemainus Theatre Festival playing Captain Keller, a role which he later reprised for Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops. He has been directing for over 20 years - recent productions include Tamarack by Edward Kuhn, Wrong for Each Other by Norm Foster, The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey and Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell, all for TheatreOne, as well as independent productions of Marion Bridge by Daniel McIvor, and The Occupation of Heather Rose by Wendy Lill. In 2007, he adapted the script and co-directed a version of A Midsummer Night's Dream for TheatreOne's Young Company.

In the course of his career Garry has developed his craft with master teachers from across Canada, New York, LA, Paris and London. For the past 15 years, he has also shared his experience with Theatre BC in many ways - as a frequent Zone Festival adjudicator, as workshop play director, as well as teaching acting and directing workshops. He has also served as a juror for TBC's Canadian National Playwriting Competition and as director/dramaturge at the New Play Festival. In 2005 he had the honour to adjudicate the Mainstage Festival in Nanaimo. Garry lives with his partner, Donna, in a sweet little house on Gabriola Island.

All workshops are upstairs in Merry Hallsor Room unless noted otherwise. Please wear comfy clothes & bring a notebook, pencil and pen.

Cost $10 per session or $25 for whole weekend for adults. Youth (ages 15 - 18) FREE! Sorry, there will be no children for this event.
Cheques can be made out to Skeena Zone of Theatre BC.

April 24th
FRIDAY EVENING - 7-10 pm
Back to Basics in Acting & Directing (Based on "The Melville Boys" by Norm Foster).

Workshop for actors & directors – How do we make a play come alive? How do we ensure that we're telling the full story? Garry will address breaking down a scene, finding wants & needs, playing actions, as well as making basic blocking choices, secondary life and how to use the stage to our advantage. This is good info for everyone to brush up on, and kick off the weekend. Please read The Melville Boys by Norm Foster as prep. If you need a copy, it can be emailed to you. Those involved in other aspects of the weekend are invited to audit this session as an intro to the work. Youth are strongly encouraged to participate in this session.

April 25th
SATURDAY MORNING – 9:30 am – 12 pm
Youth Workshop

This workshop will utilize either scripted material that participants bring, and/or exercises, discussion, including basic repetition exercises, and working on short scenes that Garry will provide. We are inviting youth from Caledonia Senior High, Veritas Catholic Jr. High School, Centennial Christian School, Kitimat, Houston, Rupert and Hazelton drama classes to participate. We hope to have 8 to 12 youth. If we have fewer than 8 participants, they will join the Friday night, and/or Saturday scene development workshops instead. Garry asks that youth be age 15 and up.

LUNCH BREAK and Roundtable Discussion

Noon – 1:15 pm
Nailing those Costume Challenges
Bring your ideas and a notebook to capture new ones. We will give you lunch.

AFTERNOON
1:30 to 5:30 pm
Scene Development (Possibly in two parts depending on number of scenes/pieces to be worked.)

Actors with an already memorized (directed or not) short scene or monologue can offer it up for reworking with Garry. If a couple of actors want to prepare a scene from a play (not something off the internet) with or without direction that would be fine.
Scenes should be no more than 5 or 6 minutes long and should already be learned, off book, and on their feet – i.e. ready to work on.
If you're looking for material - Norm Foster's plays are excellent and many of them can be accessed by email through his website. Participants are encouraged to bring their own personal props as required.
Garry will need the piece/scene/scripts in question ahead of time and the actors should be open to making changes. If you don't have a piece, you can still participate by auditing the session.

EVENING 7-10 pm
Scene Development workshop will be continued if required, followed by Social Time, a chance for everyone to gather together.

APRIL 26th
SUNDAY
Morning 10 am – 1pm
Examining the Text - New Play Workshop (and prepping for a staged reading)

Baxter Houston's original play, One Side of the Moon, and an Umbrella, will receive be work-shopped in this session.
The playwright has been working on securing actor/readers and still needs someone to read the part of Kayla, a 19 year old first year student at University. This requires a good strong reader, and must take time to become familiar with the script. The workshop will continue through the day, with a public reading to follow in the evening.

LUNCH BREAK 1 – 2pm

Afternoon 2 – 5pm
Continuation of New Play workshop on Baxter Houston's play

Evening 7 – 9pm
Public reading followed by a discussion of the play. All are invited!

For more information and to register please contact Marianne at mbrorup@citywest.ca.

Registration fee must be paid at start of sessions. NO REFUNDS
